Update 8

January 1st, 2009 - Ryan Christenson

Happy New Year and welcome to UPC Food Search’s ninth update, or well it really should be update #102 (well I certainly lost count at some point). This update is very much our biggest update to date and the first update to be posted on our new shiny blog. :) We decided to re-structure many areas of the site and add some new features. I won’t bore you with any technical details so on to the list of new updates.

Note: The last update we posted on the old forums was labeled, “Update #8″. Since it listed no updates for the site it technically wasn’t an update at all, but rather a heads up for our next update.

Making things better is always a good way to kick off the new year. :)

New Features

  • New Blog
  • New Feedback Forum (Think something needs improvement? Have a new idea for the site? Submit them here.)
  • New Login/Registration System
  • Updated Features

  • All forms are now much easier to fill out and interactive.
  • Ingredient info boxes have been redesigned and restructured due to a bug with the Opera web browser.
  • The front page was restructured with new convenient search boxes.
  • Many other small updates and bug fixes.
  • Removed Features

  • Forums – The forums were a bit redundant given that everyone can comment on any product, ingredient and manufacturer page.
  • Old Login System Removed – If you had an account in the past you’ll have to remake it. What about my old items I added? Well you won’t have to worry about that at all, your old items will appear in your profile’s stats (if you use the same username) and the new system has better security for passwords. Everything can be still done anonymous of course, but anonomous users won’t be able to take advantage of our new upcomming point system (more on that later).
  • Features In Development

  • Member Profiles
  • Statistics page additions such as members stats.
  • Product Comparison
  • Store Buddies – The ability for online stores to retrieve product information directly from UPC Food Search. Free and commerical licensing will be available. More information coming soon.
  • Member Point System – Registered members earn points every time you add or update new info or post a comment. Chance to redeem points to be possibly offered in the future. This will start out as a Beta service.
  • UPC Food Search Mobile – Search for product on your mobile phone. Coming Soon.
